THIS IS [NOT] A PLACE

The publication was made in response to a brief surrounding the documentation of something ‘lost’. The book took one small Irish townland on the northern coast of Donegal, using it as a microscopic example of the loss of culture, heritage, language, population and folklore seen across the island and indeed the world at large. The piece examined anthropologist Marc Augé’s neologism ‘non-place’, a theory exploring places of transience and the notion of what constitutes a place, how we define somewhere worthy of the term. The book employed various literary and design techniques to conjure a sense of language, accent and dialect central to the region, as well as the decline in vitality and energy of the place. The publication was successful in gaining me entry to the organisation, of which I have been a member since 2019.
